A flame of hope: the Olympic Torch journey

The Olympic Torch enters Sussex on Monday 16 July – Day 59 of its 70-day route around Britain. It pops into Kent on the 17th for a while and then comes back for the rest of the day and for the start of the 18th. Details of the itinerary so far released show that it will stop at two key Sussex landmarks, Petworth House, on the 16th and Battle Abbey on the 18th.

It will have an overnight stay and evening celebration on the 16th in Brighton and on the 17th in Hastings.

Games organisers say that more than 95 per cent of the population will be within just 10 miles of the Olympic Flame next summer. The street by street detail of the route will be confirmed next year.

The Torch sets off from Portsmouth and enters Sussex at Rogate. It then goes to: Midhurst, Easebourne,Tillington, Petworth, Duncton, Chichester, North Bersted, South Bersted, Bognor Regis, Woodgate, Westergate, Arundel, Worthing, Lancing, West Blatchington,

Tuesday 17 July

Brighton & Hove, Crawley, Copthorne,

Felbridge, East Grinstead, Tunbridge Wells (obviously in Kent!), Crowborough, Lewes, Eastbourne, Pevensey Bay,

Pevensey, Bexhill-on-Sea, St Leonards-on-Sea, Hastings (Evening celebration)

Wednesday 18 July

Hastings, Rye. The Torch then heads into Kent on its way to its next overnight stop in Dover.

About the Torch

The Torch is:

• Perforated with 8,000 holes to represent the 8,000 Torchbearers
• 800mm high
• 800g in weight
• It is triangular to represent the “power of 3” shown in:
• The 3 Olympic values: respect, excellence and friendship
• The 3 words in the Olympic motto: faster, higher, stronger
• To recognise the 3 Olympic games the UK has hosted in 1908, 1948 and 2012
• The vision for 2012 Games to combine 3 bodies of work: sport, education and culture.
